Among the lyres we own are two different replicas of Anglo Saxon lyres; a Sutton Hoo model and a Taplow model.
In the picture you will see a replica of the Anglo Saxon lyre, found at Sutton Hoo. Dating back to around 625 AD, only the golden escuthions and some pieces of the yoke were found.
At Taplow another lyre was found, but as in Sutton Hoo only the yoke and the lyre-mounts were identifiable.
It wasn't until 20o3 when in Prittlewell yet another lyre was dug up, but this time the whole thing was visible in the coloration of the earth! The yoke and more escuthions were found, so it is an educated guess that these lyres bore resemblance to one another.
Combining all the research done on these lyres, as well as studying depictions of them in Anglo Saxon literature; the replicas we play were made!
